TIBET: “Qing conquest and administrative rule (1720–1912)
Major content: Chinese expedition to Tibet (1720) and Tibet underneath Qing rule
Tibet in the Qing dynasty in 1820.

Through this period, the area was dominated by the Dalai Lamas with the assist from the Qing dynasty proven by the Manchus in China. The Qing rule in excess of Tibet was proven immediately after a Qing expedition power defeated the Dzungars who occupied Tibet in 1720, and lasted till the slide of the Qing dynasty in 1912. The Qing emperors appointed imperial residents known as the Ambans to Tibet, who commanded above 2,000 troops stationed in Lhasa and reported to the Lifan Yuan, a Qing government company that oversaw the region during this period of time.

The Kangxi Emperor of the Qing dynasty despatched an expedition army to Tibet in response to the profession of Tibet by the forces of the Dzungar Khanate, alongside one another with Tibetan forces below Polhanas (also spelled Polhaney) of Tsang and Kangchennas (also spelled Gangchenney), the governor of Western Tibet, They expelled the Dzungars from Tibet in 1720. They brought Kelzang Gyatso with them from Kumbum to Lhasa and he was installed as the seventh Dalai Lama. Qing protectorate over Tibet was founded at this time, with a garrison at Lhasa, and Kham was annexed to Sichuan. In 1721, the Qing recognized a governing administration in Lhasa consisting of a council (the Kashag) of a few Tibetan ministers, headed by Kangchennas. The Dalai Lama’s role at this time was purely symbolic, but continue to really influential because of the Mongols’ spiritual beliefs.

Soon after the succession of the Yongzheng Emperor in 1722, a collection of reductions of Qing forces in Tibet transpired. Nevertheless, Lhasa nobility who experienced been allied with the Dzungars killed Kangchennas and took regulate of Lhasa in 1727, and Polhanas fled to his indigenous Ngari. Qing troops arrived in Lhasa in September, and punished the anti-Qing faction by executing total people, which includes gals and little ones. The Dalai Lama was sent to Lithang Monastery in Kham. The Panchen Lama was introduced to Lhasa and was presented temporal authority around Tsang and Ngari, generating a territorial division between the two higher lamas that was to be a extended lasting feature of Chinese policy toward Tibet. Two ambans ended up recognized in Lhasa, with enhanced numbers of Qing troops. In excess of the 1730s, Qing troops have been once again minimized, and Polhanas obtained additional electrical power and authority. The Dalai Lama returned to Lhasa in 1735, temporal electricity remained with Polhanas. The Qing identified Polhanas to be a loyal agent and an effective ruler more than a stable Tibet, so he remained dominant right up until his death in 1747.

At many destinations these as Lhasa, Batang, Dartsendo, Lhari, Chamdo, and Litang, Green Conventional Army troops had been garrisoned all over the Dzungar war. Environmentally friendly Typical Military troops and Manchu Bannermen were being each section of the Qing power who fought in Tibet in the war in opposition to the Dzungars. It was stated that the Sichuan commander Yue Zhongqi (a descendant of Yue Fei) entered Lhasa first when the 2,000 Eco-friendly Common troopers and 1,000 Manchu troopers of the “Sichuan route” seized Lhasa. In accordance to Mark C. Elliott, immediately after 1728 the Qing employed Eco-friendly Normal Military troops to man the garrison in Lhasa alternatively than Bannermen. In accordance to Evelyn S. Rawski both equally Environmentally friendly Typical Military and Bannermen made up the Qing garrison in Tibet. In accordance to Sabine Dabringhaus, Environmentally friendly Regular Chinese troopers numbering extra than 1,300 had been stationed by the Qing in Tibet to assistance the 3,000 potent Tibetan military.

The Qing had made the area of Amdo and Kham into the province of Qinghai in 1724, and incorporated jap Kham into neighbouring Chinese provinces in 1728. The Qing govt despatched a resident commissioner (amban) to Lhasa. Polhanas’ son Gyurme Namgyal took about on his father’s demise in 1747. The ambans became confident that he was heading to guide a revolt, so they killed him. News of the incident leaked out and a riot broke out in the metropolis, the mob avenged the regent’s death by killing the ambans. The Dalai Lama stepped in and restored order in Lhasa. The Qianlong Emperor (Yongzheng’s successor) sent Qing forces to execute Gyurme Namgyal’s family and 7 users of the team that killed the ambans. The Emperor re-arranged the Tibetan govt (Kashag) all over again, nominally restoring temporal electric power to the Dalai Lama, but in simple fact consolidating ability in the palms of the (new) ambans.

The defeat of the 1791 Nepalese invasion increased the Qing’s control above Tibet. From that minute, all significant matters had been to be submitted to the ambans. It strengthened the powers of the ambans. The ambans have been elevated earlier mentioned the Kashag and the regents in duty for Tibetan political affairs. The Dalai and Panchen Lamas have been no more time authorized to petition the Qing Emperor instantly but could only do so as a result of the ambans. The ambans took command of Tibetan frontier protection and overseas affairs. The ambans had been place in command of the Qing garrison and the Tibetan military (whose energy was set at 3000 guys). Trade was also limited and journey could be undertaken only with files issued by the ambans. The ambans ended up to assessment all judicial choices. Even so, according to Warren Smith, these directives have been both never ever fully carried out, or immediately discarded, as the Qing were much more interested in a symbolic gesture of authority than genuine sovereignty. In 1841, the Hindu Dogra dynasty attempted to establish their authority on Ü-Tsang but exactly where defeated in the Sino-Sikh War (1841–1842).

In the mid 19th century, arriving with an Amban, a group of Chinese troops from Sichuan who married Tibetan gals settled down in the Lubu community of Lhasa, wherever their descendants recognized a local community and assimilated into Tibetan lifestyle. Hebalin was the place of where by Chinese Muslim troops and their offspring lived, though Lubu was the place the place Han Chinese troops and their offspring lived”
