19C Anglo Ceylonese Specimen Wood Trinket Box

PRESENTING A Lovely and Uncommon 19C Anglo Ceylonese Specimen Wooden Trinket Box.

Manufactured in &#8216Galle&#8217, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) circa 1860-80.

Produced for the export sector to Britain and offered generally to British aristocrats and diplomats.

The box is manufactured from sandalwood, ebony, bone and unique specimen hardwood triangles, all about the top rated, entrance, again and sides.

Casket in form and form with a raised system leading.

Every exotic specimen hardwood triangle is inlaid among and bordered by ebony banding, each individual profusely inlaid with round bone inserts of alternating measurements.

The box has it&#8217s primary lock and catch and is hinged to the rear to elevate upwards.

The within of the lid/leading is superbly embellished with, yet again, ebony banding with bone circle inserts and a rectangular central ebony plaque with it&#8217s central motif remaining, a hand-painted Asian Elephant with rider and bejeweled headdress and back again cloth. This stands over a plaque insert that reads: &#8220GALLE&#8221 and is flanked by a pair of huge circular bone inserts with wonderful hand-painted flower blossom in the middle. The lid inside has crimson velvet lining.

It sits on 4 ebony button feet (a recent repair service/substitute) with painted ivory circles to replicate the relaxation of the piece.

There are letters/numbers engraved into element of the base which are complicated to decipher but appear like: &#8220MO 2148&#8221. We do not think they have any excellent importance and are likely the makers initials and design quantity.
